Collaborative work with over:
2 in 3 Basque companies involved in R&D and innovation activities
25 companies included in the IBEX 35 index
COLLABORATION WITH COMPANIES
We want to accompany companies with our R&D and innovation potential and advanced services, while our technological excellence is acknowledged and the value of our alliance forging capacity is recognised.
We are committed to maintaining a business relationship model which is increasingly strategic and based on trust, collaboration and a shared technological strategy to achieve the highest value-adding proposal to boost their competitiveness.
Since 2011, we have collaborated with over 7,800 companies, 75% of which are SMEs. We work with two out of three Basque companies involved in R&D and innovation activities. Likewise, we collaborate with 25 of the IBEX 35 companies.

Impact of the Activity
IMPACT DATA
During this cycle we have been able to observe, thanks to our own methodology and tool, the increased positive impactof our activity on different scopes, such as economic, scientific-technological, social or environmental .
This has enabled us, on the one hand, to make an assessment of the degree of compliance of our mission and vision during this strategic cycle, assisting in the setting and achievement of the strategic objectives and, on the other hand, to confirm with data our conviction that there is a clear relationship between competitiveness, growth, employment and social welfare, with the systematic and growing commitment to R&D and Innovation.
In 2020, in spite of the difficulty represented by the COVID crisis, we have managed to improve all impact indicators and thus continued to increase our impact during this strategic cycle.
Some of the results obtained regarding the measurement of the impact of our activity in 2020 and its evolution compared to 2017, are as follows:
For every Euro invested by a company in R&D with TECNALIA, an income of €10.30 is added to its Income Statement, compared to €6 in 2017.
IN R&D
STATEMENT
For every job in TECNALIA, 5 other jobs are kept in the Basque Country, increasing the value by 40% compared to 2017.
IN TECNALIA
BASQUE COUNTRY
For every Euro invested in TECNALIA by Basque Public Institutions, GDP of €16.20 is generated, compared to €14 in 2017.
INSTITUTIONS
For every Euro that Basque Public Institutions invest in TECNALIA, a tax return of €1.90 is obtained, an increase of almost 10% compared to the return obtained in 2017.
INSTITUTIONS
RETURN

TECNALIA calculates its Carbon Footprint (CF) according to the principles of the standard UNE-ISO 14064-1: 2012 since 2012 to know the environmental impact of its direct and indirect activities with the aim of implementing improvement actions to reduce it, which have focused on energy efficiency and sustainable mobility. In 2019, more indirect activities were taken into account to calculate the Organisational Environmental Footprint (OEF) with its own tool, thus updating the CF. In 2020, the calculation of TECNALIA’s OEF and CF for the 2019 financial year was externally verified.
The data for the last two financial years, 6501 total GHG (t CO2 e) and 3315 (tCO2) respectively, show that the reduction in impact has been due to the reduction in energy consumption and travel due to the pandemic. The energy efficiency of buildings and sustainable mobility are therefore maintained as lines of action in the 2024 strategic period.
Furthermore, at TECNALIA, we have developed an entrepreneurship ecosystem which helps us recover and launch our technological assets through our Deep Tech Venture Builder, TECNALIA Ventures, with the ultimate aim of generating value for businesses and society. Our efforts are focused on connecting the three main pillars of any innovation ecosystem: “Minds” (technologists/scientists), “Management” (entrepreneurs) and “Money” (investors).
As a result of this, TECNALIA obtained income of €4.4 million in 2020 from the Sale of Industrial Property.

PATENTS IN FIGURES
Moreover, according to the 2020 Report issued by the European Patent Office (EPO), TECNALIA is the third private Spanish organisation in European patent applications. TECNALIA has applied for 2.6 patents for every 100 researchers, which is the highest ratio, compared to other organisations of a similar nature.
